About San Fernando CA

San Fernando, which translates to “St. Ferdinand” in Spanish, is a general-law municipality in the San Fernando Valley section of Los Angeles County, California, which is a part of the Greater Los Angeles Area. The City of Los Angeles encircles it on all sides. There were 23,645 people living in San Fernando as of the 2010 Census.

The community was a portion of the Mexican land grant known as Rancho Ex-Mission San Fernando and was named after the nearby Mission San Fernando Rey de Espaa (itself was named after St. Ferdinand). Charles Maclay, the man who founded San Fernando, acquired the Rancho’s 56,000 acres (227 km2) in 1874. George K. Porter and Benjamin F. Porter, cousins and owners of the future Porter Ranch, each obtained a third of the whole acreage in 1882. In his newly established town of San Fernando, Maclay established the Maclay School of Theology, a Methodist institution, in 1885. Following his passing, it changed its affiliation, moved to the University of Southern California campus, then to the Claremont School of Theology.
