About Granada Hills

Located in the San Fernando Valley district of the City of Los Angeles, the community of Granada Hills is a suburban neighborhood. The neighborhood features a variety of municipal recreation centers in addition to a sports program. There are fourteen public schools and 10 private schools in the neighborhood.

In the beginning, the neighborhood was a dairy farm and orchard known as the Sunshine Ranch. There, they farmed a variety of fruits and nuts, including apricots, oranges, walnuts, and beans. Many residential yards still have orange, lemon, or grapefruit trees, which are relics from the days when the land was covered in citrus groves. In 1916, the first oil well in the San Fernando Valley was dug in the area that is today known as Granada Hills. The location of the oil well was at the most northernmost point of Zelzah Avenue. Granada Hills was initially established in 1926 under the name “Granada,” and the “Hills” element of its current name wasn’t added until 1939.
